This 119-foot Mikimiki class ocean tug named Ku'ulakai since 1977 is being restored, possibly as a live-aboard home. Originally the Ernest F. Ladd, built in 1944 for the U.S. Navy by Northeast Shipbuilding Co. Quincy, Massachusetts. Used for towing disabled ships to port in WW2. In 1949 renamed the Lloyd B. Gore used for beachcombing and fishing, then later to smuggle drugs.
Looking west from Steveston, the summer sun sinks slowly behind the clouds and mountains of Vancouver Island and Gulf Islands, casting a red glow across the entire scene. The body of water in between is the Strait of Georgia and the grassy foreshore is known locally as The flats. It floods at high tide covering the entire foreshore.
