The Cowes beach front has been reinforced with granite boulders. These concrete stairs provide convenient beach access.
Although a mid-summer's day, approaching storm clouds from the west, are the harbinger of a wet weather front. The Cowes Beach is strangely empty.

Cowes is located on the lee shore of Phillip Island and as such is not subject to large ocean breakers crashing to the shore. This beautiful strand stretches some 10 plus fully protected kilometres. Even during the hight of the tourist season, only a man and his dog can be seen on the beach.
A strong southerly wind brought large crashing waves onto the rocks at the south-west end of Surf Beach sometimes call Phillip Beach.
Accessible over the large sand bluffs known as Forest Bluff, this spectacular beach conceals caves in the rocks at high tide. Forrest Caves (sea caves formed by erosion) are located just before the Surf Beach Estate, left off the main Phillip Island Road. Walk up the steps from the car park on to the beach, then turn left. The caves are only accessible at low tide.
