Neighbourhood Walks - 26 May

These shots were taken during daily walks around our Vancouver neighbourhood. No them - just shots that interested me.

  • Harmonious Style

    Harmonious Style

This is an example of recently built house on a narrow 33 foot Vancouver lot. While in every way a contemporary home, the appearance has been deliberately crafted to reflect the Arts and Crafts features of its surrounding neighboursl

These homes are often quite narrow situated on 33 foot lots, the standard narrow lot size in Vancouver, although there are even narrower lots. These homes tend to have a single footpath down one side of the lot. Access to the rear of these houses is via laneways. Most of Vancouver has rear lanes down which the utilities run and where telephone poles are located. Garbage collection is also a back lane activity.

  • Multi-Unit Conversion

    Multi-Unit Conversion

It is very likely that when this lovely old home was built, it was a single family dwelling. Now, like so many others from the era, this home has been converted to a mult-family dwelling. Sometimes this means at least two suits per floor. That would be six separate suites.

    Men’s Fastpitch

The Meraloma Men’s Fastpitch team is a highly competitive group that competes in the Connaught Park Fastpitch League and maintains an interlocking schedule with the Lower Mainland Fastpitch League featuring teams from Vancouver, Richmond, Surrey and Burnaby.

  • Grey House

    Grey House

This house is larger than the previous photos being built on a 55 foot lot. Vancouver has the highest residential house pricing in Canada, equal to Toronto. Popular Arts and Crafts Homes like this are sold in the $1.5 range in 2016.

  • Large Victorian

    Large Victorian

This beautiful home displays all the characteristics of a classic Vancouver home. As far as I could tell, it's one of the few in the area that has not been converted into a multi-family dwelling. I was unable to determine, but this house may have recently been built to comply with urban-renewal regulations to build homes sympathetic with the local style.

  • Welcome Home

    Welcome Home

Judging by the worn paint of the stairway, many people have climbed these stairs over the years. The lot size of 55 feet allows for a more substantial home; this one featuring a side-to-side verandah and fitted granite stone columns.

  • Yellow House

    Yellow House

Another version of a Vancouver house. This one is likely a contemporary version of the theme.

  • Kitsilano Heritage House Revitalization

    Kitsilano Heritage House Revitalization

The Kitsilano neighbourhood consist of homes built at the beginning of the twentieth century. Constructed primarily of timber, a readily available inexpensive material. Bylaws encourage renovation of these homes maintaining the original design facade. If these homes are torn down they must be replaced with homes designed to look like homes constructed in that era.

I'm amazed at the number of bicycles I see in the neighbourhood. The city has encouraged bicycle usage in the inner city by constructing dedicated lanes that run over bridges and through neighbourhoods. The have selected dedicated secondary roadways that run parallel to the main roads to separate cyclists and vehicles.

    ...by any other Name...

Even late spring in Vancouver brings spectacular displays of colourful flowers. During our evening walks, we often make little headway as we stop to marvel at the blooms and often end up talking with the owner/gardeners. It's one of the unexpected joys of our time in the Kit's Neighbourhood.
