  • Groyne

    Groyne

Groynes (US: groin) are structures built across a beach, usually from dry land out into the water, while breakwaters are built parallel to the beach. Both of these structures interrupt the alongshore movement of sand.

This portion of the photo contains most of the components of the full-size photo and make a good stand-alone photo composed with the rule of thirds.

  • Sunrise

    Sunrise

This shot was taken just before the the sun appeared above the horizon. Photographers refer to the 30 minutes prior to and following sunrise as the blue hour. The colour changed from pale pink, through to bright orange an then to subtle grey over the course of the next five minutes. The blue diagonal streaks are caused by clouds casting shadows. Some photographers call these "god-rays".

  • Groyne - new structure

    Groyne - new structure

This is one of three new groynes constructed in 2015 to reduce sand erosion along the Dunsmore Rd beach. At $50,000 per groin, the remaining old structures will await another day for replacement.

    Sunrise over Dunsmore Beach

As with all sunrises, they have a 10 minute life at best. The view of the photo is on the north side of Phillip Island looking east. During the summer, the sun rises at the furthest south in the horizon and is somewhat obscured at this point.
