St Paul's Cathedral - Melbourne
The initial reaction to the interior of this building is one of awe. The rich tones set by the beautiful tile floor, colourful arched columns and warm timber pews combine to make this a peaceful and sacred place. St Paul's Cathedral is the seat of the Anglican Primate of Australia and home church for Anglicans in Melbourne and Victoria. St Paul’s Cathedral is built on the site where the first public Christian services in Melbourne were led by Dr Alexander Thomson in 1836.
Once a wharf holding a wool shed, the decking no longer exists, but the vertical pylons do. To stand sentinel to their historic purpose, they have been left in place and capped with fibre-glass tops which are both attractive and preserve the pylons from rot. The Bolte Bridge can be viewed in the distance.
Just around the corner from the cathedral is Hosier lane; what a contrast! What a comment on society. Wall-to-wall graffiti, and wall-to-wall photographers. Hosier Ln. is a specified location for 'street art'. We ran into a little difficulty with some street people who resented photographers. See the next photo.
