Weathered Timber Groynes - 13 to 15 January

I was fascinated with the weathered timber on these old groynes, located along the Cowes eastern foreshore, installed in the 1940's. They are being replaced with new timber structures, so I was happy to capture these shots showing how they have stood up to sun, wind, sand and salt water. The last two are merged photos.

This shot, looking west, clearly shows a new Groyne as well as the old.

  • Standing Sentry

No longer effective in performing its purpose, like an old soldier, the remains of this old groyne provide witness to days long gone.

    Rust, Corrosion, and Weathering

Truth be known, I could have spent hours photographing these timer structures. The weathering is wonderful and the texture is beautiful. One can only guess the things these breakwaters have witnessed. Laughing noisy children, impromptu cricket games, picnics, lovers - the mind boggles.

When I was younger, I loved to sail. It was a passion involving my entire family. Now, I'm content to sit and gaze on a lovely ocean scene and watch others enjoy sailing. Photographing scenes like this provides me great satisfaction.

  • Weathered Bolt Hole

    Weathered Bolt Hole

This hole was created by a rusting bolt once there to hold heavy timber rails intended to prevent sand erosion. The strutting gull is the only indication of activity on a hot summer day by the beach.

At least 60 year old weathered post, probably Redgum a very durable wood, impervious to rot. I suspect this post would be tougher than concrete.

Constructed in the 1940's to abate sand erosion. These Groynes have stood up well to wind, rain, sun and salt water. They are currently being replaced by new timber groynes.
