Though no more than 50 metres from one of Melbourne's busiest freeways, the tranquil billabong provides a wonderful place to sit, relax and contemplate.
Koonung Creek Reserve has extensive wetlands which attract waterfowl of many kinds. In spite of their colouring, these are known as Pacific Black Ducks.

The chestnut teal is a dabbling duck found in Australia. It is protected under the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974. Chestnut teals form monogamous pairs that stay together outside the breeding season, defend the nest site and look after the young when hatched.
