Blackburn Lake Sanctuary ~ April
Blackburn Lake Sanctuary is located in the Melbourne easter suburb of Blackburn. The park sits on around 30 hectares (74 acres) of land. In 1889 the lake itself was formed when Gardiners Creek was dammed to provide water for local fruit growers. The lake grew in popularity as a tourist destination, with visitors from Melbourne travelling two hours by steam train to reach it.

Blackburn Lake at "The Landing"
This view looks west. The distance tree are changing colour. (Australian native trees are evergreen, so the autumn colours reveal these trees are not natural to Australia.)
This shot is a good representation of the natural growth in the park. Close to the water the bush is dense with almost impassible undergrowth. The water looks "brackish" but in reality, though not drinkable, is fresher than it appears. Like most slow moving waterways in Australia, the tea-brown colour comes from the mud and siltation through which it passes Spot the Duck
