Blackburn Lake Sanctuary ~ April

Blackburn Lake Sanctuary is located in the Melbourne easter suburb of Blackburn. The park sits on around 30 hectares (74 acres) of land. In 1889 the lake itself was formed when Gardiners Creek was dammed to provide water for local fruit growers. The lake grew in popularity as a tourist destination, with visitors from Melbourne travelling two hours by steam train to reach it.

Not lake mist but smoke haze. This photographer used what he can get.

This view looks west. The distance tree are changing colour. (Australian native trees are evergreen, so the autumn colours reveal these trees are not natural to Australia.)

  • Duck Point

    Duck Point

Looking east, Duck Point is the most frequently used location for photographers. It's next to impossible to capture a unique perspective, but still, the view is attractive.

This shot was taken from "The Landing" looking southwest, providing one of the few good vistas of the lake.

Pleasant walks abound. My visit took place after a prolonged dry spell. The dry bush floor can be clearly seen. Much of the "fuel" for bush fires has been cleared as a fire prevention measure.

  • Gardiners Creek Billabong

    Gardiners Creek Billabong

This shot is a good representation of the natural growth in the park. Close to the water the bush is dense with almost impassible undergrowth. The water looks "brackish" but in reality, though not drinkable, is fresher than it appears. Like most slow moving waterways in Australia, the tea-brown colour comes from the mud and siltation through which it passes Spot the Duck

  • The Friend Bridge

    The Friend Bridge

The bridge, just visible to the right, crosses a dry creek bed. It appears that the creek bed only fills during prolonged heavy rains which have not occurred for months.

  • Gumtree Deadfall

    Gumtree Deadfall

I was taken with the beauty of this decaying tree which the Sanctuary wardens leave where it fell. The patterns and texture inspired me to think of the years it took to grow to maturity before it succumbed to old age and a passing storm. Such a grand old boy!

  • Gardner Creek

    Gardner Creek

At this point in Gardiners Creek, it is almost swamp-like. I was very cautious hen here as I can imagine this is the perfect habitat for snakes.

    Texture

A different species than shown earlier in this gallery, this photo depicts the beautiful texture and rich colour of the bark of this fallen tree.

  • Lakeside Walk

This bench provides walkers a place to sit and relax. Glimpses of the lake are minimal from this location, but when one sits quietly the music created by native birds becomes quite audible.

Here, the undergrowth has been removed to provide creek access. Spot the ducks

  • Geranium

    Geranium

Though their is nothing special about this flower, it's the last flowering blooming in the sanctuary's flower garden. I admire its staying power.
