Cowes Morning - January

Visited one of my favorite waterfront locations shortly after New Year's day. This is a collection of shots all taken within 50 metres of each other.

  • Orange Glow

    Orange Glow

Sometimes a cloudless sky reflects the orange of the setting sun and everything in view glows orange.

  • Disappearing History

    Disappearing History

This is one of just a few old erosion groynes. In this state, they have ceased to serve their purpose as has been the case for many years. Unfortunately, the new structures lack the photographic appeal of these ones.

  • Cowes Beach Groynes

    Cowes Beach Groynes

This view is from one of the sand islands formed due to the new erosion attenuators. Whilst it appears I'm standing out from shore, I'm actually on dry sand.

  • Silver Gull

    Silver Gull

The silver gull (Chroicocephalus Larus) is the most common gull seen in Australia. It has been found throughout the continent, but particularly at or near coastal areas. It is smaller than the Pacific gull, which is also found in Australia.

  • Shifting Sands

    Shifting Sands

This little sand bar was formed overnight. This conveys the reason for the groynes which help control erosion. The way action moves tonnes of sand back and forth along the coastline depending on tides and currents.

  • Breaking Dawn

    Breaking Dawn

This shot captures the rising sun over Cowes Beach. The timber structure in the distance is the remnants of one of the old groynes intended to stop beach erosion. Most of these old structures have been removed and replaced by new heavy--duty timber erosion barriers.
