The photos in this gallery were taken during a brief visit to far north tropical Queensland. We needed to escape the dreary southern winter.

Orange and yellow heliconia, Strelitzia, Bird Paradise. Strelitzia is a genus of five species of perennial plants, native to South Africa. It belongs to the plant family Strelitziaceae. The genus is named after the duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, birthplace of Queen Charlotte of the United Kingdom.
The "lobster claws" form cups with retain water from the rain to provide nourishment.
