Trees

Trees have always held a fascination for me. They are timeless, rich in texture, and ever so varied in shape and size. This is a collection of some of the tree photos I've taken.

This White Oak stands in the water of a small reservoir used to provide water for cattle. Bugscuffle Road runs along side this dam. This water is used by the local wildlife which can ofter be seen in the early hours of the morning, or after sunset.

    Eucalypt Forest - Wombolano Reserve

Eucalypts are iconic Australian forest trees. Ninety-two million hectares of the Eucalypt forest type occurs in Australia and forms three-quarters of the total native forest area. The term ‘eucalypt’ includes approximately 900 species in the three genera Eucalyptus, Corymbia and Angophora. Almost all eucalypt species are native to Australia. Eucalypts evolved from rainforest ancestors, adapting to an environment in which drought, nutrient-poor soils and fire were increasingly common. Eucalypts have oil-rich foliage that burns readily, and they display a range of strategies to survive and recover from fire. The majority of eucalypt species are evergreen, retaining their leaves year-round.

    The Tree

While all the trees along the edge of the park show evidence of the ravishes of weather, the corner tree seems to be the most stunted.

Its always amazed me how large fir trees grow in solid rock ground. Although these photo were captured during mid day light, not the best time for photos, they never-the-less reveal the beauty of the Pacific coast. (sky composited)

  • Black Willow

    Black Willow

If I'm correct about this species (Salix nigra), this is a cultivated tree growing in the North 40 Park Reserve in Ladner, B.C. This was a small village built to accomodate families of training instructors training Commonwealth airman for WWII air defense.

    Final Hours of the Day

This is a shot of some of the trees of Wombolano Reserve in Ringwood. Catching the late afternoon light, they appear gold and green, true Aussie colours.

    Northern Red Oak

Located adjacent to the property line between us and out neighbours, this tree is beginning to bud. I grabbed this shot to record the tree's structure, which like all trees is a thing to marvel.

I have a kind of personal relationship with this tree. Over 50 years ago, I used to practice rock climbing on the cliffs right below this tree. It sits atop granite cliffs some 10 metres high and was often used by rock climbers as an anchor point. I was one of them, that is before I had a serious climbing accident which came very close to killing me. It was kind of like meeting an old friend when I visited this location today. I was pleased to see the tree had matured and seems to be very healthy.

  • Dead Eucalyptus

    Dead Eucalyptus

Wombolano Reserve: This and the following nine photos were taken in a small nature reserve known as Wombolano Reserve. Common in the Australian bush, this ghost gum stands proudly reminiscent of its past glory awaiting its eventual fate of becoming a victim of a wind storm.

Tall silver gums reaching for light under a canopy of green foliage. Perhaps these gums were outdone by their stronger healthier neighbours.

The White Mangrove (Avicennia marina) is the only mangrove species found in Victoria. It also grows in tropical areas as much larger trees. Mangroves have a range of features that allow them to survive on the edge of the sea in the challenging habitat of thick, airless and salty mud. Taken from a slightly different point of view, I look forward to adding a third shot taken at high tide with a sunset. This view looks north-west.

    Bugscuffle Meadow

This shot was taken in the bottomland below Bugscuffle Ridge on which my brother's home sits. This is the road that leads up to his house. I was taken by the light filtering through the Pecan trees which form double "cathedral-like" arches.

This photo is a standard exposure of the sun setting behind the clouds. The water is calm but rippled.

  • The Root of the Matter

    The Root of the Matter

This interesting image shows the way tree roots split apart rock formations. The rock is sedimentary, hence a little soft compared to granite and susceptible to water erosion. The valley bottom is replete with cave-like erosion which needs exploration to determine if North American aboriginal people have used these caves in any way.

This fallen tree in Wombolano Reserve awaits its eventual end as it slowly rots on the bush floor adding to the nutrient of the soil.
